Sydney forward Patrick Wood has been mocked for producing one of the worst misses in football history after firing an open goal-scoring chance from close range.
The 21-year-old started upfront for Sydney in their A-League clash against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday and was left with his head in his hands after the catastrophic error.
Sydney were already 3-0 up inside the first half hour of the game when Wood had a golden chance to give the visitors a four-goal cushion in New South Wales, Australia.
A back pass to Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was spilled into Wood’s path via a poor touch that gave the Sydney forward a huge chance to score an easy tap-in.
Wood was just two yards from goal and turned into an open net as he took a first touch to set up a finish that should have been tapped easily over the line.

However, he somehow pulled his effort wide of the post to the shock of everyone inside the stadium, including his teammates and opposition players.
The easier finish could have been to first strike the ball with his weaker left foot instead of taking an extra touch and inviting more pressure.
Wood immediately put his head in his hands as realization set in, before trudging back towards the halfway line as a goal kick got the game back.
Commentators on the goal on TNT Sports couldn’t believe what had just happened and described Wood’s shocker by saying: ‘Oh and miss, anything can and does happen because you’ll never see that again.

“That’s the most amazing miss, he must wish the earth would just swallow him up.”
Social media reacted to the glaring miss with expected criticism, while fans laughed at the mistake. A comment to X read: ‘Embarrassing that he doesn’t trust his left foot from two meters out.’
Another added: ‘Deserved miss, should have rolled it home with his left foot instead of running around the ball to use his right.’
Sydney went on to win the match 3–1, with Wood substituted in the 61st minute.
