The series follows young Lali (Jonah Hauer-King), a Slovak Jew deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, where over a million Jews were murdered.
Shortly after arriving, he is made one of the tattooists charged with putting identification numbers on the prisoners’ arms.
One day he meets Gita Furman (Anna Próchniak) when she is brought to him to have an identification number tattooed on her arm.

‘We have to keep living. Whatever it takes, says Gita. ‘Love still exists. Even here.’
Some 60 years later, a recently widowed Lali (Keitel) meets novice author Heather after the death of his love, and he finds the courage to tell the world his story.
