Polarizing Australian basketball player Liz Cambage has once again courted controversy by being ejected from a match in China for maliciously elbowing an opponent in the head and punching another in the face.

The former WNBA player and Australian Opal found her career on the rocks after allegedly making racial remarks towards the Nigerian national team in a warm-up match ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Opal’s teammates and members of the Nigerian team claimed Cambage called his opponents ‘monkeys’ and told them to ‘go back to your third world country’ during a break in play.

That put her offside with her Los Angeles Sparks Nigerian-American teammates, and she was ultimately released by the franchise.

Her comments also divided the Opals camp and she has since been blacklisted from ever representing her country again.

However, Cambage landed firmly on her feet, earning a $1 million contract with Sichuan Yuanda women’s team based in Chengdu – for just three months of work.

Her bumper payday means Cambage earns more than four times as much as the highest-paid WNBA stars, with Supermax contracts capped at $234,936 per season. season.

However, that money has done little to dampen the centre’s temper after she was kicked out at the weekend for a couple of nasty incidents.

In the first, Cambage strikes out and hits an opponent on the side of the head from behind while on the defensive.

Lucky to still be on the field, she threw a nasty elbow into the head of an opponent while on the offensive.

That led to her ejection from the match, but Cambage was far from done.

After refusing to leave the court while she tried to get officials to review the incident on video, she stormed up to an official in a threatening manner and screamed in his face before taunting the crowd and delivering a curtsy.

Cambage herself shared highlights from her club, posted on Instagram, with SiChuan Yuanda Basketball Club writing: ‘Liz Cambage had a highly effective performance today, scoring 21 points 11reb 2ast 2stl 2blk, with 7 of 8 two-pointers and 1 out of 1 three-point attempt’.

As the Opals prepare for a tough campaign at the Paris Olympics, several online commentators said they were glad Cambage would not be part of the tournament.

“Liz has a few issues to work through,” wrote another.

Cambage’s team lost the game 96-85 as Inner Mongolia evened the series at 1-1.
