  • Says he will play IPL ‘until I can’t walk anymore’
  • Now the focus is on the Big Bash with the Melbourne Stars.

Glenn Maxwell has revealed when he will retire from T20 cricket and it won’t be anytime soon.

The Australian ODI World Cup hero in India recently turned 35, but his passion for a shortened version of the sport remains.

Speaking ahead of the 13th edition of the T20 Big Bash on Australian shores, which begins on Thursday evening in Brisbane when the Heat host the Melbourne Stars at the Gabba, the ‘Big Show’ said he will continue to play in the Indian Premier League for as long as his body holds on.

“IPL will probably be the last tournament I will ever play as I will play IPL until I can’t walk anymore,” he said.

“The IPL has benefited me throughout my career: the people I’ve met, the coaches I’ve played under, the international players I’ve interacted with and how beneficial the tournament has been for my entire career.

“It must have been difficult to recreate that in any other series or tournament around the world.

“Even at the World Cup you only play against your opponent quickly, you get a two-minute chat after the game and that’s it.

“In the IPL, you spend two months interacting with AB (de Villiers) and Virat (Kohli), talking to them and watching other games at the same time… it’s the greatest learning experience you can ask for.”

Maxwell’s immediate goal is to lead the Melbourne Stars to BBL glory this summer, with the trophy having eluded the men in green back in 2011.

He missed last summer after breaking his leg at a friend’s birthday party and is eager to make up for lost time.

The veteran is also looking forward to seeing how the next generation brings their class to competition.

“Guys like (Melbourne Renegades young gun) Jake Fraser-McGurk and (Sydney Thunder batsman) Ollie Davis… these young guys have so much talent and are so great to watch,” Maxwell said.

“Sam Harper is another player for us (at the Stars) … I hope it’s a really exciting summer for the BBL.”
