Elon Musk has been mocked for his red carpet appearance at the annual Breakthrough Prize ceremony this weekend.

The SpaceX founder, 52, was seen hamming it up for the cameras as he struck a series of awkward poses – from stretching his arms up and out like an orchestra conductor to a bizarre faux-tortured expression.

Between poses, Musk, who was joined at the event by the likes of Margot Robbie, Robert Downey Jr and Kim Kardashian, seemed amused by his own efforts, chuckling to himself as he surveyed the crowd of photographers and reporters gathered infront of him.

Naturally, users who saw the 32-second clip on Musk’s social media platform X were quick to ridicule the billionaire after it was shared by The Hollywood Reporter.

“The awkward grin and frantically looking around for validation every time kills me,” cringed one X commenter.

In the short video, Musk is also seen poking fun at the go-to celebrity on the red carpet by looking at cameras over his shoulder with his back turned.

But not everyone was as impressed with his move as he appeared to be.

“The awkward laughing and frantically looking around for confirmation every time kills me,” wrote one.

“It’s like watching Mitt Romney try foreplay,” imagined another.

“Embarrassing,” scoffed a third.

“When you get your drawing on the fridge,” a fourth mocked alongside a still of Musk looking extraordinarily pleased with himself.

“What a tool,” scoffed a fifth.

‘Why is he posing like a sim,’ chimed in the sixth person, observing that his movements resembled the stilted, unnatural-looking maneuvers of the humanoid Sims avatars in the eponymous video game series.

“He wants to be Tony Stark so badly,” a seventh pointed out of Musk’s apparent reverence for comic book characters.

Still, a few X-users came to Musk's defense - with one even defending his 'being goofy on the red carpet' and pointing out that criticism would be better at exercising the billionaire's actions

‘Oh god, it hurts to watch. Why is he acting like a 10 year old who just discovered anime?’ an eighth sounded.

“Richest man on earth, can’t pose for a picture,” sighed a ninth.

Still, a few came to Musk’s defense.

‘Now that’s why we love the man. He’s extremely smart, yet so humble and funny,’ cried one musk-eater.

And another wisely argued that perhaps the peanut gallery should reserve their judgments of Musk’s actions rather than tear his surface mannerisms apart.

In their words: ‘So many mean comments and why? Over someone’s appearance? Being silly on the red carpet? It’s actually quite endearing. Criticize people for their actions or words, but the personal attacks tend to say more about those who engage in that way than those who are attacked.’
