Newly hired Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan used the words of Jurgen Klopp to introduce his philosophy regarding his new role.

At his introductory press conference on Thursday, Callahan took to the podium and admitted how he hoped to practice the Liverpool manager’s ideology after directly quoting him.

“That’s a Jurgen Klopp quote,” Callahan said. “I didn’t want to just rip it off and make it my own, but at some point he said it: he’s a football manager at Liverpool.”

“He said, ‘When you agree on a common idea and work towards it together, you can create something special.’ This is what I believe in, this is what we will do here.”

Callahan further reiterated that “success cannot be achieved without these principles.”

Callahan’s admiration for his European counterpart is not surprising as Klopp is one of the most respected football managers in football.

Klopp memorably turned around the fortunes of German club Borussia Dortmund, which had been struggling before his arrival in 2008. Two years after taking charge of a 13th-placed team, Klopp led Dortmund to two consecutive Bundesliga titles and three German Cups.

In 2015, Klopp left Germany to take over Liverpool in the Premier League.

Since then he has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup. Klopp is the only Liverpool manager to win six different major trophies.

On the other hand, Callahan is entering his first head coaching position after serving as a graduate assistant at UCLA and working for several NFL teams.

Callahan was an assistant coach with the Denver Broncos, where he won the Super Bowl in 2016.

He then worked as a defensive backs coach for the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders before joining the Cincinnati Bengals as offensive coordinator.

The Titans hired Callahan after firing Mike Vrabel at the end of his sixth season in Nashville.

“This is an exciting time for our team and we are thrilled to have Brian as our head coach,” said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. “We conducted a thorough search for candidates and Brian emerged as the best person to lead our football team.

“Brian has a proven track record of success and extensive experience that has prepared him for this opportunity. His football knowledge and enthusiasm for the game are truly outstanding, and on top of that, we think his ability to lead will make him an ideal candidate for our team.”

The Titans finished 6-11 this season, finishing last in the AFC South standings.

Callahan will try to lead the team to its first playoff appearance since 2021.
