Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown called the referee “overly emotional” after receiving his first career ejection in Friday’s 133-123 win over the New York Knicks.
Brown was ejected from the field in the fourth quarter after receiving two technical fouls in a row. The first came after Brown tried to challenge the foul, and the second followed shortly after he returned to the bench.
“I always thought my first career rejection would be something more exciting,” Brown said after the game. “Maybe a fight or something, guys curl up and get on the ground, not some overly emotional referee having a bad day.” What upsets me the most is that I should have gotten my damn money.”
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said an official told him Brown said “don’t take that week’s crap with you” after fouling Immanuel Quickley. Crew chief Mark Lindsay later told a pool reporter that the first technical foul was called for using profanity at an official and the second was for “swinging his arm toward an official.”
“You could tell there was emotion involved, XYZ wanted things to go back and forth,” Brown said. “I explain to the referee and he calls a second technician from the other side of the court, which is a prime example of someone using their power to try to throw someone out of the game. I thought they were bulls***.”

Brown received back-to-back technical fouls in the fourth quarter against the New York Knicks.
“I was out of the NBA game for five years and I saw players act and say things that were much more disrespectful than that,” Mazzulla said of the firing.
Before leaving, Brown had 17 points and four assists.
The Celtics continued to rally and closed out the game thanks to a 30-point performance from Derrick White. Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis also scored 25 and 21 points, respectively.
Combined, Boston shot 52.7% from the field and 40.4% from beyond the arc while maintaining a perfect 10-0 record at home.
The Celtics are 16-5 this season, leading both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference.
Brown will return to action when the Celtics host the Cleveland Cavaliers at TD Garden on December 12.
