Chris Hemsworth has revealed he was turned down for a role in a Kevin Costner-directed film, only to discover Costner had cast himself.

Talking to Entertainment tonight on CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday, the Australian actor, 40, said he fell in love with a mystery project and even tried to convince Costner, 69, to change his mind.

“There was a movie, a script that I had read and loved and was like, ‘I want that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that (role),'” the Thor star began.

‘I would love (to have) him as a director. I thought, “Damn!” (I spent) an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he said, “I’ll do it, kid.” Did not work. I didn’t get the role’.

Hemsworth remained tight-lipped about the name of the film, describing it as ‘abstract and interesting… a little story about a man and a woman.’

‘It’s certainly better seen in his wheelhouse, as far as that sort of Western environment. There are horses involved, he’s a horse griller and my wife reads it and loves horses,’ Hemsworth said. ‘

‘We have 10 or 11 horses at home and so she says: “You have to do this”‘.

Costner also spoke to Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon about snubbing Hemsworth, saying: ‘It’s a love story, but as long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it.’

“Chris will have to wait his turn,” he continued brutally, adding: “He’s so handsome and he’s so good. He’s going to have to find his (own) love story. (But) I’m glad, that he likes this one.’

However, Costner admitted that Hemsworth could still have a chance to win a role in one of his films in the future.

‘If I reach a moment where I (don’t) think I could do it, I would (reach out). He’s definitely one of our big leading men right now,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chris is focusing on promoting his upcoming action film Furiosa as well as Transformers One, where he talks about Orion Pax, a young Optimus Prime.
