Climate activists were arrested by police on Monday after they occupied the street in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ home in Brentwood, California.

A group of about 40 activists from the Sunrise Movement criticized slogans against Harris and demanded that the Biden administration declare a climate emergency to enact more draconian measures to stop climate change.

“We are occupying the street outside VP Harris’ home to demand that she join us in calling on Biden to declare a climate emergency,” the group wrote on social media, sharing video of their activists chanting slogans.

“Found climate action not genocide,” read a sign indicating they were not happy with the Biden administration’s financial support for Israel’s war in Gaza.

The group spent the night on the street next to Harris’ home in protest. They appeared disillusioned with Harris’ lack of action on the issue, recalling the positions she espoused while running for president in 2020 as the Green New Deal.

Harris’s motorcade was forced to take an alternative route from her home to the Los Angeles airport on Monday as she had planned a campaign trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Harris, Harris, can’t you see, this is an emergency,” chanted the protesters, insisting that “fossil fuels are killing me.”

Six of the activists were arrested by the police.

One of the arrested activists criticized Biden and Harris for continuing to allow record fossil fuel production.

“I’m on the front lines raising my voice for my black and Latino families and friends because I know we deserve to have affordable housing and health care, we deserve an administration that will fight for us, but instead of declaring a climate emergency, see Biden and Harris expand oil and gas production to record levels,” said Ariela Lara, 18, according to for a publication.

A guarantee fund was established per GoFundMe to help get activists out of jail, but at the time of publication, only $90 of their $5,000 goal had been reached.
