In the battle between the NHL’s best rookie and the league’s best player, age seemed to flare as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.

Connor Bedard, Chicago’s sensational rookie, scored a beautiful goal to open the scoring.

However, Connor McDavid, the sport’s reigning MVP, had two assists to help the Oilers come out on top.

McDavid assisted Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ first goal for the Oilers and then assisted Zach Hyman’s fourth goal of the night for Edmonton.

Between the two, goals from Sam Gagner and Leon Draisaitl helped bolster the Alberta team’s lead.

But Bedard’s first goal was a real spectacle.

After receiving a pass from Alex Vlasic, he accelerated to get past defender Evan Bouchard. From there, he used the back of his stick toe to pull the puck back before switching to his forehand and firing the puck past Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner’s glove.

The messy release brought the few assembled Blackhawks fans to their feet at Rogers Place, but it would be the single best moment of the night for Chicago.

McDavid was able to find his longtime teammate Nugent-Hopkins in open ice in front of the net to tie the game 1–1.

Just before halftime in the first period, Edmonton’s Derek Ryan passed the ball to Gagner, who helped the puck past the pads of Chicago goalie Petr Mrazek and take the lead before the break.

In the second period, Chicago defenseman Nikita Zaitsev essentially scored an own goal that was credited to Leon Draisaitl to give Edmonton a 3–1 lead.

Finally, McDavid found Zach Hyman standing on Mrazek’s doorstep all alone to redirect the play neatly and make it 4-1.

Chicago now falls to 9-18-1 on the season and next faces the Seattle Kraken on the road. Edmonton (13-12-1) hosts Tampa Bay.
