Dr. Reza Tirgari, 54, of San Diego, California, shared four tips for losing weight during the holidays in a recent TikTok video.
The cosmetic surgeon advises reducing your sugar and carb intake, which means cutting out holiday cookies and smoothies.
“Do you want to lose weight over the holidays?” he is asking. “I’ll give you four simple tips.”
The surgeon’s first advice is to cut down on sugar, which means cutting back on holiday cookies and smoothies.
“Sugar is highly inflammatory and makes it difficult for your body to absorb too much of it,” he explains.
Dr. Tirgari also recommends cutting back on carbohydrates, which are known to increase weight.
Sugar and carbs may seem like holiday staples, but that doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself during the holiday.
A medical expert says it’s equally important to increase your protein intake when you’re trying to lose weight.
“Protein will actually be very helpful in controlling your weight,” he explains.
Protein helps you feel fuller longer, keeps you lean, and is harder to store as fat,” scientists say. Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Tirgari says you should also increase your protein intake when you’re trying to lose weight.
Dr. Tirgari’s final piece of advice is to engage in weightlifting, which will help you build muscle and lose weight over the holidays.
The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults get a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day or 0.35 grams per pound of body weight per day for overall health.
However, some experts advise eating between 0.75 and 1 grams of protein per pound of body weight for weight loss.
Dr. Tirgari’s final tip: Start weightlifting this holiday season.
“Guys, grab these weights even if you’re walking up and down stairs and holding dumbbells,” he says.
“You’ll be surprised how much energy you’ll have and how much weight you’ll lose just by building muscle.
“Weightlifting is great for this.”
As for those who are not willing to sacrifice themselves during the holidays, they should not worry too much about gaining weight.
Research published New England Journal of Medicine found that the average weight gain for adults over the holidays was 0.37 kilograms, or just under a pound.
