Cricket great Brad Haddin slams ex-teammate Mitchell Johnson for attacking David Warner – as Anthony Mundine brands bowler’s outburst a ‘low act’

  • Said it was an aggressive attack on Warner’s person.
  • Mundine calls explosive takedown ‘un-Australian’

Former Australian goalkeeper Brad Haddin and former boxing champion Anthony Mundine have criticized Mitchell Johnson for his unusual strike on David Warner.

Johnson wrote an explosive newspaper column on Saturday questioning why Warner deserved a “hero’s send-off” after his role in the Sandpapergate cheating scandal and poor Test form.

“Mitch’s resume was a little weird and left-wing,” Haddin said on his Willow Talk podcast.

“I don’t mind former players saying, ‘OK, this is why I wouldn’t take him on the team, this is what I would look at.’

“It seemed like an aggressive attack on Davey’s personality, which I don’t think you need.

“Yes, you can have your own opinion about what you think the team should be, but I don’t like it when players from the past are very hard on players from a personal point of view and it seemed a bit similar to me.

“Everyone has the right to their opinion about their choice.

“Frankly, he attacked David and George at levels you don’t want to see anywhere. It left a bad taste in some people’s mouths.”

Former world champion boxer Anthony Mundine also criticized Johnson for the attack, which he said was “un-Australian”.

“This is a low act (on Johnson’s part). Everything should be positive. Former teammates, teammates, have to stick together. It’s not Australian,” Mundine said.

‘The same thing happened to me. When I retired from football I went overseas to clear my mind and clear my head and (former Dragons captain) Craig Smith gave me a bit of a beating. He didn’t know what I was going through.

“Why doesn’t Mitchell talk to him face to face first?” There might have been some kind of relationship there based on those five years (when we were Australian team-mates).”

Mundine also believes Warner truly deserves the fairytale farewell he wishes for at the SCG next year.

Anthony Mundine believes attacking Warner was a “low act” and “un-Australian” as he supported the slugger’s dream plans. Farewell to the test at the SCG.

“Dave has the edge,” Mundine said.

“The proof is in the pudding.” It will be a fitting way to end his Test career. He deserves it.

“Mitchell needs to own up to what he did and Dave is a good enough person to forgive and move on. It’s just another chapter in life.”
