Crystal Palace were denied a penalty against Liverpool in Saturday’s match at Selhurst Park after a VAR replay ruled out the penalty following a review that lasted more than three minutes.
The penalty was initially awarded after Reds captain Virgil van Dijk fouled Odsonne Edouard in the box, with referee Andy Madeley immediately blowing his whistle for the foul.
Van Dijk was shown a yellow card after replays showed the Liverpool defender made clear contact with the Palace striker before a review began into whether Will Hughes had fouled Wataru Endo in the build-up.
VAR official John Brooks instructed Madley to check the decision on the pitchside monitor, with the review then replaying the incident at different angles and speeds.
Ultimately, it was correctly ruled that Hughes had fouled Endo when he drove hard into the back of the Liverpool midfielder to win the ball back, and the penalty was overturned.

Van Dijk’s yellow card was subsequently taken away and the visitors were instead awarded a free kick with the match still scoreless.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand agreed with the final decision and insisted Hughes had been too aggressive in trying to win the ball back for his team.
“It took a while to get there, but in the end it was the right result,” he told TNT Sports.
“Yes, a free kick, aggressiveness and Roy Hodgson will want it. Will Hughes was aggressive but above target. After watching and considering it was the right decision.
“They (Palace) had the better opportunity so far, they had the best chance because Alisson made a great save. “Liverpool need to be a little stronger in attack to create chances, but Palace will be the happier team at the moment,” he said.
