Eastern Michigan ‘deeply upset and embarrassed’ after football player sparks mass fight by SUCKER PUNCHING rival from South Alabama following defeat in 68 Ventures Bowl

Eastern Michigan “strongly” condemned the brawl that followed its loss to South Alabama – after one of its playersUcker hit his opponent on the back of the head.

“We are deeply upset and embarrassed,” the school said. “What happened was completely unacceptable.”

South Alabama routed the visitors 59–10 to win the 68 Ventures Bowl, but the team’s celebration was cut short when one of its players was attacked from behind.

South Alamaba players and staff stood facing the marching band in the stands and sang the school anthem. when Eastern Michigan’s Corey Hernandez rushed across the field and hit South Alabama’s Jamarrien Burt.

Moments later, players from both teams began fighting. On Sunday, Eastern Michigan apologized for the “totally unacceptable” behavior.

Eastern Michigan’s Corey Hernandez rushed to hit South Alabama’s Jamarrien Burt.

Punches were thrown as players from both teams became involved in violence in Alabama.

“We strongly condemn the actions of some of the student-athletes on the EMU football team in the disgusting incident that occurred last night following the 68 Ventures Bowl,” EMU Athletic Director Scott Weatherbee said in a statement.

“We apologize to the Eastern Michigan University community, the South Alabama team and their fans.”

Wetherbee said both he and EMU coach Chris Creighton apologized to their colleagues at South Alabama, while the school has spoken with Mid-American Conference commissioner John Steinbrecher and is “fully committed to working together to investigate the incident.”

Some staff members tried to put an end to the violence as punches were thrown and South Alabama players charged at rival Eastern Michigan, who was lying on the floor.

Footage that appeared on social media showed a brawl after the game ended.

Fracas continued to flare up even after tensions seemed to have begun to cool. Toward the end of the video, which appeared on social media, one South Alabama player tackled an opponent to the floor.

In accordance with reportsthe violence occurred after tempers flared during play, and at least one major altercation will occur on the South Alabama sideline.

Burt’s older brother, defensive back Brian Dillard, was said to be among those who rushed to his defense before both teams were sent to their respective locker rooms.

Afterward, Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said, “We had a really good, long talk in the locker room after that.

“We want to always be top-notch, no matter the circumstances, no matter what the scoreboard is, no matter what other factors, no matter the people, no matter what is involved. And anything that isn’t top-notch isn’t up to the standards of Eastern Michigan football.

“I think our guys really care about doing well. I’m sure we were embarrassed by the way we played and it probably didn’t take too long to get our guys to a place we hope they never get to.”
