Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool took the record away from Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United after Harvey Elliott took the Reds to the top of the Premier League on Saturday with a late winner at Crystal Palace.

Elliott came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 91st minute as Liverpool came from behind to win 2–1 at Selhurst Park.

His goal was Liverpool’s 17th stoppage-time goal since Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club in 2015, one ahead of the 16 United managed by Ferguson in the Premier League era.

United’s ability to get results with late goals led to stoppage time in their games being dubbed “Fergie Time”.

But over the past eight years, Liverpool have become the kings of stoppage time, with Klopp’s men refusing to give up until the final whistle.

In 31 years in the Premier League, Liverpool have scored 43 goals in the 90th minute or later – 11 more than nearest rivals Arsenal – and 40 per cent of those goals have been scored since Klopp took charge.

Late play became Liverpool’s calling card, with players appearing from all over the pitch to turn the game in their favor at the death.

Some of their most memorable goals came late in the Kop, with Divock Origi capitalizing on a Jordan Pickford mistake to win his team the Merseyside derby back in 2018, leading to Jurgen Klopp running onto the pitch to celebrate with Alisson.

Liverpool also benefited from a Toby Alderweireld own goal that season to move ahead of Tottenham.

Arguably their most famous late strike came from Alisson when he met Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner to secure a 2-1 win over West Brom in May 2021.

His header proved vital in Liverpool finishing in the top four after a disappointing campaign.

They have already scored two stoppage-time winners this season, with Darwin Nunez completing a remarkable comeback for the Merseyside side with a 93rd-minute strike in a 2-1 win over Newcastle in August, before Elliott created his own chance magic this weekend.

Luis Dias also earned Liverpool a point when they looked set for defeat at Luton last month.

The goals could prove decisive in the title race as Liverpool look to win the league for the 20th time in their history.

Klopp’s side moved one point clear of Arsenal at the summit this weekend after the Gunners lost 1-0 to Aston Villa.

They will have the chance to retain top spot on Sunday when they host bitter rivals United at Old Trafford.

The Reds will hope a late winner is not needed as they prepare to face a struggling United side who suffered a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.
