Former New York Yankees baseball and baseball broadcaster Cameron Maybin has called on his former team to scrap 50-year-old club rules to improve the team’s chances of winning.

Maybin argues that the Yankees can further bolster their roster if they end their policy that prohibits players from having facial hair below their upper lip.

“This may be an unpopular approach among Yankees fans, but you’d be surprised how much more attractive the Yankees would be if they got rid of that facial hair rule,” Maybin wrote on X, previously on Twitter.

“You wouldn’t believe how many good players just think it’s a stupid rule,” Maybin added. “I mean, come on, we’re approaching 2024, leave it alone already and I swear it would be more attractive. Again, this is just based on my conversations and experience in the game.”

This rule has been in effect in the organization since George Steinbrenner bought the team in 1973.

Yankees star and reigning MVP Aaron Judge keeps his shave clean

The Yankees acquired Juan Soto, who also shaves his facial hair, from the Padres.

Yankees star Aaron Judge and newly acquired Juan Soto keep their faces clean-shaven.

The facial hair rule is one of the few unique to the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers are known for excluding players’ names from their jerseys, and are one of only two teams in Major League Baseball to never wear an alternate third jersey.

Maybin played for the Yankees in 2019 and, because of this policy, kept his face shaved throughout his only season in pinstripes.

Meanwhile, in 2005, outfielder Johnny Damon was forced to shed his signature caveman look after signing with the Yankees. General manager Brian Cashman also cut Brian Wilson more than a decade ago due to his refusal to shave his beard.

The Yankees added firepower after acquiring 25-year-old Juan Soto in a trade with San Diego on Wednesday. Soto will join forces with reigning MVP Aaron Judge as the Yankees pursue 25-year-old Japanese phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Both Soto and Yamamoto wear baby faces, which will help them stay in the Yankees’ good graces.

Several players over the past half-century have grown mustaches as allowed by policy, including legends Goose Gossage, Don Mattingly and Thurman Munson.
