Homeless man, 25, says he could ‘hardly sleep’ after his sleeping bag was soaked by security guard with a mop and bucket in ‘disgusting’ incident outside McDonald’s
A homeless man has told how he “could barely sleep” after a security guard deliberately wet his sleeping bag with a mop and bucket outside a McDonald’s.
Aaron McCarthy was sitting outside the Nationwide bank branch next door to McDonald’s on Victoria Street in London on Saturday night when he was asked to leave by security guards who he claimed became aggressive when he refused.
Footage uploaded to social media showed a security guard mopping the floor next to where the 25-year-old from Limerick, Ireland, was sitting, prompting a furious reaction from passersby.
He later said he couldn’t sleep because of the “stressful” situation, which left his bed linen wet and smelling of bleach.
McDonald’s has since fired the security guards caught in the video and “sincerely” apologized to McCarthy.

The homeless man was sitting outside the Nationwide Bank branch – next door to the McDonald’s where the security guards worked.
The video shows the homeless man trying to move his sleeping bag and blanket away from the water seeping underneath.
He was heard saying, “Leave me alone,” as his belongings were pushed out of the way.
The man filming the incident is able to capture the ordeal as another worker tries to stop him.
The man behind the camera can be heard saying, “I’m allowed to film.” This is outrageous behavior.
“You have to admit that this is outrageous behavior. You covered his sleeping bag! This is wrong and you know it. This is not normal. The explosion failed.
In the background, a homeless man, increasingly frustrated, asks the worker, “What did you do?” I don’t even leave your store!”
A crowd then quickly forms as passersby stand up for the man, with one even handing him some money.
As the scene becomes increasingly hostile, a security guard can be seen leaving the restaurant and asking the homeless man, “Oh, why are you making trouble?”
But the crowd quickly rushes to his defense, with the man filming the video insisting: “What do you mean by causing trouble?”

“You don’t need to wipe it all off,” says a woman in the background.
Damon Evans, who posted the footage on X, tagged McDonald’s and asked: “Do you think it’s acceptable for your employees to soak the sleeping bags of homeless people in the middle of winter (or any other time of year)?”
“Disgusting behavior. He wasn’t even outside your premises.
McDonald’s UK has since responded to the incident.
A spokesman told MailOnline: “We are shocked and saddened by this incident.
“The third party security guards involved have been permanently removed from our restaurants and the restaurant team have been reminded of the importance of treating all people, including vulnerable people, with respect, both within the restaurant and in the wider community.
“We would like to sincerely apologize to the gentleman in the video and will work with the council to find him and make amends as part of our ongoing support for charities and homelessness organizations across London.”
