Jose Mourinho could reportedly be suspended following his controversial comments to referee Matteo Marcenaro ahead of Roma’s 2-1 win against Sassuolo last weekend.

Mourinho’s men came from behind to beat the 10-man hosts, but the game was overshadowed by his comments even before the ball was kicked.

Ahead of last Sunday’s match, Mourinho questioned Marcenaro’s emotional state, admitting he was “worried” about having a referee in charge of his side’s match.

“To be honest, I will say I’m worried about the referee,” he said at his pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“We’ve met with this official three times and I don’t think he has the emotional stability to perform at this level.”

That same day, FIFA, the Italian football federation, launched an investigation into Mourinho’s remarks, and following its conclusion on Monday, the Portuguese coach was summoned to a meeting with prosecutor Giuseppe Cine on Friday to explain his comments, the newspaper reported. According to the report, Mourinho cooperated with the International Football Federation during their 90-minute meeting but could still face a ban of up to 10 days as part of a plea deal.

In this case, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager is likely to miss one league match, with Roma due to host Fiorentina on Sunday evening.

The Italian giants will also face Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday before traveling to Bologna next Sunday.
