Katy Perry felt the full power of music on Monday night’s episode of American Idol, joking that one performance had made her break out the best.

The Roar singer wowed in a structured silver top by designer Kate Barton for the latest elimination stage of the singing competition.

But the unusual peak snapped just before hopeful Roman Collins’ ‘danger zone’ performance of James Brown’s It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.

A behind-the-scenes video shared on Instagram showed wardrobe assistants frantically trying to fix the piece as Katy told the camera: “I need my top to stay on.”

“If it’s not fixed, this show is going to get more than it bargained for,” she added. Fellow judge Luke Bryan even helped out with a pair of pliers, joking “I’m going in!”

Luke and third judge Lionel Richie were then heard shouting ‘rating here we come’.

Giving her feedback on the powerful performance, Katy later declared to a shocked Ryan Seacrest: ‘That song blew my top off! I guess it’s a woman’s world.’

She immediately ducked under the desk to try and hide the wardrobe malfunction as she added ‘it’s a family show’.

“You have the ability to blow the roof off a place,” Luke told Roman. “Or a top!” Laughed Katy, who at this point was holding a pillow to her chest to try and hold her ensemble together.

The dramatic episode saw America cast its vote to decide which of the season’s 20 remaining contestants would make it into the Top 14.

With the 10 singers with the most audience votes moving straight through, the other half were placed in the ‘danger zone’ to compete for the final four spots, as decided by the judges.

Away from Idol Katy has been working on her sixth studio album, her last LP being Smile in 2020.

‘I had, you know, repossessed cars, I’d been signed and dropped three times. I couch surfed. Literally. It’s so visceral to me. That’s the passion some of these kids have.’

Katy explained that she sees the ‘same passion’ from contestants as a former judge on American Idol. ‘It’s been incredible to be on this journey with them.’

Regarding her exit from the competition series, Katy said: ‘I feel so connected to America that I want to go back out there and sing and play music and hold their hands and (tour) and take my daughter and show her and all. that.’
