A frantic search for a man who disappeared in the surf at a popular beach near Byron Bay continues into a second day.

Emergency services were called to the main beach at Lennox Head at approximately 3.20pm on Christmas Eve after reports a swimmer was seen in the water in distress.

The police immediately began a search for the man, which continued until the evening, but were unable to find him.

Authorities resumed their search around 7:30 a.m. Christmas morning to find a man described as Caucasian in appearance with brown hair.

The search is involving local police, Surf Lifesavers, Marine Rescue NSW and a rescue helicopter.

No one is missing at this time, a NSW Police spokesman confirmed.
