Man, 70, dies and five others are injured after horror four car pile-up on A66 slip road

A 70-year-old man has been killed and five others injured in a horrific four-vehicle crash.

The crash happened on the A66 exit road near Hartington junction in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, just before 8.40am on Wednesday.

The road was closed for several hours as police, firefighters and ambulance crews, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene to try to rescue the man.

Cleveland Police have now confirmed that a 70-year-old man who was traveling in a white Mercedes Sprinter van with a 44-year-old man has tragically died following a medical episode. The passenger suffered a sprained ankle.

Both men were from outside Teesside.

Four more were injured: the accident involved a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a white Peugeot 208 and a black Audi A1.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “A 70-year-old man has sadly passed away following a medical episode which led to a four-vehicle collision on the A66 Hartington off-ramp yesterday morning (Wednesday 6 December).

“The road was closed for several hours following the collision at 8.40am while medical crews tried to save the man’s life.

“A 44-year-old man traveling with a 70-year-old man in a white Mercedes Sprinter van suffered a sprained ankle. Both men were from outside Teesside.

“The driver of the blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a 22-year-old man, and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

“The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 also suffered minor injuries.”

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade was called at 08:38 on December 6 to a road traffic collision (RTC) on the A66 eastbound, A178 exit road, Hartington Junction in Middlesbrough.

“Four fire engines attended from Middlesbrough, Stockton and Thornaby. Four-machine RTK. Police and NEAS were present at the event. One casualty was evacuated by crews and handed over to NEAS. We left the scene by 09.47 am.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 8.38am this morning (Wednesday 6 December) to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66 in Middlesbrough.

“We deployed three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical director and sought support from our colleagues from the Great North Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who arrived by air.

“Three patients were taken by road to James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.
