Phil Neville stormed into Manchester United after their season hit a new low following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, but he doesn’t think Erik ten Haeg will be sacked.

United played away to Bournemouth, who achieved a convincing victory thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke, Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi.

It clipped United’s wings after an impressive midweek win over Chelsea and put pressure on Ten Hag, but Phil Neville thinks he will stay on as United manager for now.

“I don’t think he’s going to get fired,” Neville said on NBC Sports after Saturday’s results. “I think what I saw today is what I’ve seen all season. Three crosses, three goals, the level of play is far from up to par.

“Newcastle’s performance and Bournemouth’s performance are probably closer to what we’ve seen all season rather than Chelsea’s performance, which was good in midweek. This is probably a remarkable event because it hasn’t happened that often.

“I feel it’s time for these players to take responsibility and start performing better. Look at today’s goals: three goals from three crosses, this is simply unacceptable.

“I think we need to get out of our heads that United have this divine right to compete for titles. Look at Newcastle and Aston Villa, they have overtaken United.

“Look at Tottenham, they overtook United. You haven’t even mentioned Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, who have already been ahead of United over the last 10 years.

“They are a million miles away from where they need to be to compete. At the moment they are where they should be in terms of productivity levels and quality.”

However, this does not make things any easier for Ten Hag and United.

They host Bayern Munich in midweek knowing their Champions League status is on the line, although the German heavyweights were beaten 5-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

When they return to Premier League action on Sunday, they will travel to Anfield to take on fierce rivals Liverpool – the current Premier League leaders.

Captain Bruno Fernandes will miss this game due to suspension.
