The wedding came six months after her late boyfriend and fellow actor John Cazale died in March 1978 from lung cancer.

A year after his death, Mamma Mia! the star thought about the loss and spoke People at the time: “Death is still very much with me. It forced me to accept my mortality, and once you do that, you look at things differently.”

After his death, the actress had to move out of the apartment she shared with Casale, and she was helped by her brother and one of his friends, who turned out to be Gummer.

Meryl and Don became close, and he subleased his New York City apartment to Meryl while he was away from the Big Apple. The couple began exchanging letters, and soon the friendship developed into something more serious.

During their marriage, Meryl and Gummer, who received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University, had four children, as well as five grandchildren.

Back in 2002, the star openly spoke about her relationship with the artist and said Fashion that the secret to their long-lasting marriage was “good will and a willingness to give in—and shut up from time to time.”

She further explained: “There is no plan of action for starting a family: it’s always a huge negotiation.”

“But I have a holistic need to work and have great bonds of love in my life. I can’t imagine how anyone could give up one for the other.”
