Mosman on Sydney’s North Shore divided over plans for 24-hour Guzman y Gomez

A popular chain Mexican restaurant has divided a community in the leafy Sydney suburb of Mosman with a proposal to open a convenience store.

Guzman y Gomez (GYG) submitted a development application to Mosman Council earlier this month in a bid to open a 24-hour restaurant on Sydney’s Lower North Shore.

The chain is seeking to open a restaurant on busy Military Road, between a pharmacy and a Lululemon store.

Nearby property owners have been notified and all community members are encouraged to submit applications by January 19th.

The property is located on a conservation area, and some community members have expressed concerns about the proposed changes to the storefront.

A number of local residents have written to the council to express their opposition.

“As a Mosman resident, I am completely opposed to any 24-hour trading in the village of Mosman: 6am to 10pm is fine, but 24 hours is not – this is unacceptable to our community,” one community member said in a statement.

Another said: “60% of reviews on TripAdvisor rate this company 2 stars or lower out of 5. There must be a reason.”

Not everyone is against the proposed bright yellow and black store, with one person commenting: “Can’t wait for it to open.”

‘Good! If you’re looking for a late night snack in Mosman… it’s time for someone to fill that gap in the market, but no doubt the fun police will be coming,” one person said.

“Who doesn’t want a 24-hour burrito.”

Others expressed concerns about whether the restaurant could survive using a 24-hour business model.

“I love GYG, but I don’t understand how he can survive 24/7. Why not until midnight? How many people will buy at 3 am?
