Nearly a dozen guests became violently ill with gastro symptoms, six of whom were taken to hospital after being exposed to a ‘toxic substance’ at an 80th birthday party.

A total of 64 guests arrived at the party on Hope Street in Norman Park, Brisbane, at 3.30pm on Sunday.

Emergency services were immediately called after several guests began experiencing gastro symptoms including fatigue, dizziness and nausea.

Ten guests were observed by paramedics at the scene before half a dozen were taken to the Mater, Princess Alexandra or QEII hospitals.

Emergency services were later called to another home in Shorncliffe at midnight after receiving reports that a woman was experiencing similar symptoms.

She was taken to Princess Charles Hospital in a stable condition.

Queensland Police said the guests fell ill after consuming a “mystery” substance.

“A large number of these people were under the influence of a substance, the nature of this substance is not known at this stage,” said Inspector Daniel Bragg. 7 News.

Police have ruled out food poisoning as the likely cause of the incident.

Emergency crews who were called to the scene were warned that guests may have been exposed to pest control work that had been carried out on the property before the party was held.

A chemical warfare team was called to the home and conducted tests but found no toxic substances.
