A car full of fireworks exploded in the Netherlands after the driver smoked a cigarette and threw it out the window, but the wind blew it back inside.

A 21-year-old man named Gerben from the Dutch town of Nieuwleusen bought 75 kg of fireworks for the New Year in Germany on Friday.

He was just a few miles from his home when he smoked a cigarette and tried to throw it out the window, but the wind blew it back, causing a fire inside his black Volvo V70.

“We saw red flashes and heard an explosion. The car went dark due to heavy smoke. We thought: we need to get out of the car,” Gerben told the Dutch publication. Hart van Nederland.

The footage shows black smoke rising into the sky and colorful rockets flying in all directions.

Meanwhile, a car horn constantly sounds and fireworks explode over a country road and a nearby empty field.

While his friend emerged from hell unharmed, Gerben suffered a burn to his leg and was forced to be treated in hospital.

Despite the firefighters’ attempts to save the car, it ended up completely burning.

Shocking photos show the crash site, which bears little resemblance to the car before the fire due to missing windows and faded black paint.

“It’s a shame my car and fireworks are gone,” Gerben said, adding that he doesn’t expect to receive an insurance payout to replace his car.

He said he had learned his lesson and would no longer smoke fireworks in his car, admitting it “didn’t help much.”

Gerben said that in his car there were about 75 kg of fireworks worth several hundred euros.

He said RTL News that although setting off fireworks is illegal where he lives, he and his friends “do it anyway”, adding that they bought fireworks from Germany “most years”.

Despite his successful escape, the 21-year-old still plans to light fireworks tonight for New Year’s Eve.

“My friend went back to Germany this morning to get some more fireworks,” he said.
