PICTURED: Florida mall shooting suspect Albert J. Shell Jr. as police hunt accomplice who ‘took evidence’ from crime scene

Florida police have named a suspect in a mall shooting that left one person dead during holiday shopping and are also searching for a second man accused of tampering with evidence.

Ocala police released a photo of the alleged gunman, Albert J. Schell Jr., 39, who is still on the run and wanted for the first-degree murder of David Nathaniel Barron, 40, at the Paddock Mall on Saturday.

Shell – a bald, bearded black man with a cross tattoo on his forehead, a tear under one eye and the outline of a necklace on his chest – appears impassive in the police photograph, his eyes averted from the photographer.

The police also sharedsurveillance footage of the man they believe “tampered with vital evidence by taking the gunman’s red hat” in the bloody aftermath of the attack.

“This hat may contain valuable DNA evidence,” the department said and urged anyone who recognizes the second suspect to contact them.

Police also shared surveillance footage of a man they believe “tampered with vital evidence by taking the shooter’s red hat” after the deadly attack.

Surveillance footage shows a white man with a medium build and tattooed arms walking through the mall with a bag in his hand.

Ocala police previously shared photos of Schell on Saturday when he allegedly killed Barron and wounded a woman in a “targeted” attack.

Authorities responded to calls reporting an “active shooter” at the Paddock Mall in Ocala, located 80 miles northwest of Orlando, around 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

Barron was shot multiple times, including in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, who was shot in the leg, was taken to hospital and is expected to survive.

At a news conference Saturday night, police said they believed it was a “targeted act” and that Barron was the intended victim.

Ocala Police Chief Mike Bulken said, “Officers immediately entered the mall and ultimately discovered that this was not an active shooter situation.”

“One adult male was found dead in a public area and one female was taken to the hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” authorities said.

The suspect “fled the mall undetected” after the shooting, leaving behind the gun, and remains at large.

“We believe the shooter fled the scene and is at large. We also believe this shooting may have been targeted,” Balken said.

Members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, county and city fire rescue teams, and the Florida Highway Patrol were on scene.

Officers locked down the mall for twelve hours and combed the building, but did not find the shooter.

Sharing new photos of the suspect, officials offered a $3,000 reward in exchange for any information leading to his arrest.

Immediately afterward, a helicopter could be seen searching the area as officers searched for the suspect.

The shooting caused shoppers to flee the store in panic due to the sound of gunfire.

Syria Williams, 18, was shopping at the mall with her mother at the time.

She told CNN: “We heard one shot, then a pause, then three more shots were fired and chaos ensued.”

She said mall employees opened a back storage facility and told everyone to run.

In addition to the two immediate victims, police said several other shoppers were injured during the shooting, with one person suffering chest pain and another reporting a broken arm.

One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a central Florida shopping center and the suspect remained on the run Saturday afternoon.

Police recovered a handgun believed to be used by the shooter, but did not specify the type of firearm.

It is still unclear how the victim and suspect knew each other and whether or how the female victim was involved.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and are committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice,” authorities said.

They added that the shooting is “the worst thing we can imagine at this time of year.”

Balken said there were “a lot of people” at the mall at the time of the shooting.

“This means there are many witnesses who could potentially help us bring this case to a successful resolution,” he added.

The mall remained closed as of Saturday evening, but the parking lot had reopened for people to pick up their cars, according to the police department.
