The president of the University of Pennsylvania has defended paying President Joe Biden a $400,000-a-year salary during the years he was out of government service.
University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill testified Tuesday before the House Education and Workforce Committee on combating rising anti-Semitism on college campuses.
Rep. Mary Miller, an Illinois Republican, used her time to question Magill about Biden’s seemingly high salary, saying he “didn’t seem to show up for work.”
“Can you give us some insight into why Joe Biden was paid almost a million dollars from UPenn, what his responsibilities were when he worked at UPenn? Did he teach the class? – Miller asked.
Magill said Biden was a “practice professor” at the Ivy League school in Philadelphia and had been on its staff for just over two years.
University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill was asked about President Joe Biden’s role at the Ivy League school, which earned him a $400,000 salary.
She said he was paid a salary of $400,000 a year.
“We also had Mr. Jeb Bush as a teaching professor at the University of Pennsylvania,” Magill added.
Bush, a Republican, former governor of Florida and unsuccessful 2016 presidential candidate. He is also the son and brother of two former presidents.
“President Biden has had a wide range of commitments,” Magill said.
She was interrupted by Miller, who asked, “What exactly were his obligations?”
“He taught seminars, took many different classes, and interacted with thousands of students during his time there. He invited speakers – the purpose of the center was to strengthen… – Magill continued, interrupted again.
President Joe Biden is in Boston on Tuesday for a fundraiser. Biden has been a “professor of practice” at the University of Pennsylvania for just over two years.
Miller was still confused about the salary.
“For $400,000?” she asked.
The Illinois Republican then claimed, without citing any evidence, that “anonymous Chinese donations” poured into the school immediately after Biden was hired.
“The House Oversight Committee is going to look into this,” Miller warned.
Since January, when Republicans took over the House of Representatives, the GOP-led Oversight Committee has been investigating Hunter Biden’s business practices in China and Ukraine, trying to link those deals to the president.
