Rio Ferdinand has named a shortlist of Premier League winners he believes Erik ten Hag should try to sign in January.
Ten Hag oversaw a busy summer of recruitment during his second season at Old Trafford, which included the £72 million arrival of 20-year-old Rasmus Hoylund from Atlanta.
Despite the hype surrounding the Dane’s arrival, Hoylund had a mixed start to life at his new club.
The striker was among the top scorers in the Champions League with five goals in his first four games before United’s unceremonious exit from Europe following defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
However, on the domestic front, things were not so fruitful for the young forward.
Rio Ferdinand insisted Rasmus Hoylund would have scored “five or six” Premier League goals at this stage if Manchester United had wingers “who cross the ball”.
The Dane is yet to open his Premier League account for United since joining for £72 this summer.
After missing the first three Premier League games through injury, Hoylund made his debut against Arsenal before being denied a goal by VAR on his first start against Brighton.
Talking about Atmosphere with five In the podcast, Ferdinand insisted that the arrival of a new striker in the upcoming transfer window could be the catalyst for Hoylund to break his league duck.
“If Manchester United had (Michael) Olise, Jack Harrison, (Dwight) McNeil at Everton, Jacob Murphy at Newcastle – I think any of those four wingers (Hoylund) would have scored five or more by now. six goals,” Ferdinand said.
‘Why? Because they throw the ball. All four guys’ first thoughts are to get the ball with their heads down, or beat the defender and cross, or give me a yard and pass the ball.
“He (Hoylund) needs maintenance. (Jarrod) Bowen (another option for United). These guys want to provide, we have hitters who either want to hit or want to beat someone.”
Of the five players named by Ferdinand, Jacob Murphy and Jack Harrison currently have the most assists in the Premier League this season with three each.
Dwight McNeil registered two goals, Jarrod Bowen one and Michael Olis zero, although his season was cut short by a hamstring injury.
