Sam Kerr jokingly compared his romance with Kristy Mewis to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship in an all-encompassing interview with Esquire magazine.
Kerr, 30, and Mewis, 30, are football’s golden couple, and fans have been obsessed with the pair’s blossoming relationship since they first went public at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The couple met while they were both playing for rival US League clubs in 2019.
They chatted online for almost four months during the 2020 Covid lockdown and then spent two weeks together in quarantine where they quickly fell in love.
“I think we were chatting about a clothing brand one day and then things went south,” Kerr said of the early days of their relationship.

The spotlight on Kerr has intensified since Australia’s magical trip to the World Cup. She said she appreciates it when fans reach out to her with kind words, but admits that the extra media attention was an aspect she had to adjust to.
“What’s new for Matilda and me is that people now talk about our personal lives, the kind of house we bought or how much money we make,” she said.
“And these (stories) are usually far from reality—they don’t correspond to who I am or the truth.”
Kerr jokingly compared their relationship to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Kerr and Mewis met on the field several times, notably in Tokyo. The United States won that day, and Kerr admitted she felt torn when she walked onto the field.
“It really sucks because it was such a f***ing time for me and such an amazing time for Christy,” she added.
“It’s so hard to want someone to lose when you love them so much.”
