Pogues singer Shane MacGowan’s widow has thanked Johnny Depp for the support he has shown her and called him an “angel”.

Victoria Mary Clark, 57, praised the 60-year-old actor for maintaining friendship and loyalty to her husband despite his post-career illnesses and addictions.

Sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram, Victoria wrote: “Johnny is one of the most gracious angels and I know Shane truly appreciated how respectful and accepting he was of every aspect of his being.

“(This was) even at a time when many people considered him a hopeless drug addict and past his prime.

“The adoration that Johnny had for Shane was a great source of support and strength during some really difficult times.

“I am forever grateful that he never thought Shane was imperfect, brilliant or beautiful.

“Thank you JD for being a tower of strength to me these last few days and I bless you from the bottom of my heart.”

Hollywood star Johnny was constantly at Shane’s grieving widow’s side, helping carry Shane’s remains as a coffin bearer and also performing at his funeral service. He also attended the cremation.

Victoria said she felt pain and loss, but was encouraged by the support and love she received.

Shane, who would have turned 65 on Christmas Day, died in Dublin last month and his service was held in Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

His funeral was watched by millions on television around the world and at his church service hundreds were unable to stand only after thousands lined the path of his coffin in Dublin and Neen.

Victoria recently admitted that grief “wasn’t as bad” as she expected after Shane’s passing.

In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Victoria, who married the singer in 2018, said she had spent decades worrying about Shane’s demise.

However, now that she was in a bad place, Victoria explained that the amount of love and support she received helped her cope.

“I spent many, many years, probably at least 35 years, worrying about losing Shane because he pushed the boundaries of what people could do with their bodies so much,” she said.

“I was afraid of it. I thought I was going to fall apart. I thought I was going to die, I thought I wouldn’t be able to speak, I’d go into a coma or I’d do drugs myself – something like that.”

She continued that she was “overwhelmed by the amount of love” she received after her husband’s death.

“I want you all to know that it (losing a loved one) is not as bad as you think and there is a huge amount of love that comes your way when you lose someone you didn’t really expect.”
