Concerns have been raised over Nesotri Irankunda after the Bayern Munich-bound wonderkid broke down in tears after being substituted on Sunday.
Irankunda, 17, was visibly upset after failing to make an impact in Adelaide United’s men’s A-League game against Brisbane Roar as Roar ran out 2-0 winners to move into second place in the table.
There are high hopes for Irankunda after he moved to German powerhouse Bayern Munich for a league-record fee, but his suffering since leaving has caused concern among fans and pundits.
“He’s under a lot of pressure, he’s the great hope of Australian football,” Roy O’Donovan told Channel 10.
“You have to remember, he’s only 17, he’s still going through puberty, he’s got a lot of emotions, he’s got a lot of pressure to deal with.
Nestori Irakunda was inconsolable after being substituted on Sunday
The 17-year-old was left devastated after failing to make an impact at Adelaide United.
“Now, he didn’t handle it very well today, he didn’t handle it well a couple of weeks ago, he definitely needs an arm around the shoulder. I think he needs some time away from the field.”
Luke Wiltshire has said Irankunda is “not yet ready” for the mental challenges of top-level football.
“You can clearly see that he is not ready for this… if we are talking about the Socceroos and international football, because you need to be able to manage your emotions because you will get it, no matter how old you are,” he said .
“We all want to see him at his best, but everyone knows that to be the best you need to be happy, you need to be good and have a clear mind.” Luckily he has people around him to help him get through it.”
O’Donovan added that Irankund had a “shocking moment” on the pitch and needed the right support to help him find his footing.
Irankunda is highly rated and is set to join Bayern Munich in 2024.
“He’s a huge talent, a mega talent, but for him everything happens very quickly,” he said.
“We have Bayern Munich, talk about Sokerros. Today he had a shock and is having a hard time coping with it.
“This is one of those times where he needs a strong team.”
