Dandenong fire: Massive blaze breaks out in Melbourne suburb

A massive fire engulfed the factory, blanketing the Melbourne sky with thick black smoke, prompting urgent attention and action by authorities.

Dozens of firefighters are battling an out-of-control blaze at an industrial site in Dandenong South, in the city’s south-east.

The paint plant on Superior Drive caught fire just before noon Friday.

According to eyewitnesses, several buildings were burning, and the sounds of explosions were also heard.

Authorities have issued an appeal to residents of Bangholm, South Dandenong and Lyndhurst to stay at home.

“Anyone in the south Dandenong industrial area surrounding the Hammond Road area should immediately shelter indoors,” the warning said.

Residents of nearby suburbs should close all doors and windows, turn off heating and cooling systems and keep pets indoors.

Police remain at the scene.

“At this stage the situation continues. Nearby streets were closed and nearby businesses were evacuated, the spokeswoman said.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time and use Frankston Dandenong Road or EastLink as alternative routes.
