Former spouses TJ Holmes and Amy Robach are currently dating – a year after the TV stars caused an uproar with their scandalous romance.

But the shocking change of spouses is not the first time devoted partners have found solace in each other, as Shania Twain’s enduring love for husband Frederic Thiebaud proved.

The couple began an unexpected relationship in 2008 after Shania’s husband Robert “Mutta” Lange had an affair with her former best friend Marie-Anne Thibault – Frederic’s wife.

The couple subsequently tied the knot in 2011 and have been happily married ever since.

Now, as Holmes’ ex-wife Marilee Fiebig and Robach’s ex-husband Andrew Shue get closer after heartbreak, DailyMail.com looks back at Shania’s shocking affair…

Shania Twain, 58, married music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, 75, back in 1993 – after he heard her original songs from her debut album.

He offered to work with her, and the couple stayed in touch by phone for several months before their fateful first meeting in June 1993 at a fan fair in Nashville.

Just six months later, on December 28, 1993, they married and were considered one of Hollywood’s strongest couples.

In 2001, their son Edge was born.

However, cracks began to appear in the marriage. The couple moved to Switzerland to live a simpler life away from the spotlight after the country star saw her career skyrocket and become a best-selling crossover artist.

Shania and Marie-Anne were very close friends. They met when Marie-Anne worked as Lange’s assistant and translator.

Shania found out about Lange’s affair with her best friend the day after he asked her for a divorce.

She previously said of that moment: “I had a full-blown panic attack. I just told her she was a bad person and that’s all I could say!”

“When I left her, I thought: “You are such a weakling, a coward!”

Days after the split in 2008, Shania said she went into a tailspin.

“I was ready to die,” she wrote in her memoir “From That Moment,” and said she barely ate or slept.

She says she even wrote an email to Marie-Anne begging her husband to take her back and wrote: “I’m dying and I can’t take this anymore. This is killing me. Have mercy.’

But although she begged, she never received any explanations or any details about the relationship from either her husband or Marie-Anne.

What made the pain even worse was that she told Marie-Anne about the problems in her marriage and her fears that she believed Lange was having an affair.

But Marie-Anne dismissed Shania’s concerns and told her she had nothing to worry about, leaving her feeling “stupid” for even suggesting it.

When she finally got up the courage to ask her if there was something going on between her and her husband, Marie-Anne told her with tears in her eyes: “It hurts me that you could even think that I’m hiding something from you.”

But it was Frederick who finally told Shania the truth.

He told her that he had found phone bills, hotel information and receipts, and also remembered seeing a garter belt and underwear in her luggage for a trip she was going to be “alone” on.

In the book, Shania wrote: “I was disgusted that another woman’s desire for a better lifestyle was worth the destruction of my family.”

But what turned out to be “perverse” irony. Shania and Marie-Anne’s ex-husband turned to each other in their time of need, finding a friendship that blossomed into love.

The couple eventually married in January 2011 in an intimate beach ceremony in Puerto Rico – six months after Shania’s divorce was finalized.

She said: “I don’t take a single day for granted anymore. Fred gave me a new life in love.”

Shania said she was initially hesitant about dating her love rival’s ex-husband and was “worried about what people would think about the relationship.”

But Thibault gradually wins Shania’s affections and calls his bride “Sunshine.”

He surprised her with romantic gestures, such as taking her to a Swiss glacier or renting a movie theater for an intimate dinner for two.

“Words are not enough to express your love. Every day I fall in love with her more,” Thibault said.

Earlier this year, Shania revealed that Lange was still in a relationship with Thibault – 15 years after their affair was revealed.

Appearing on the Armchair Expert podcast with co-hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, The Man! The “I Feel Like A Woman” singer revealed that she and Lange are parents to son Edge, now 22, but never speak.

She said: “Mutt and I are good at raising children – for people who don’t talk to each other. We’ll just write.

“We both love our son very much, so we don’t play such games. We have the same priority; we share seats for him. No nonsense.

After confirming that Lange was still with Thibault, she spoke about the beginning of her relationship with Frederic, calling the romance a “beautiful surprise” and “something she deserved.”

She joked about the pair “playing musical chairs” when they switched places, but said she “didn’t know Fred very well” before their split.

She said she saw “how gracefully and graciously he dealt with the same pain” after the affair was revealed, and although she felt “fragile,” he seemed “thoughtful.”

She said: “Fred is so smart. This is one of the smartest people I know, (and) he didn’t know (about this novel) either. It made me feel better. I got what I deserve. I have the greatest man on the planet.”
