My friend showed up to my wedding as a surprise, ate four pizzas and had sex with my sister – some people say I should cut him off, but others claim I’m the idiot

A groom who was left in an awkward situation on his big day due to a “surprise” guest has taken to social media to find out if he was wrong to be annoyed.

The unnamed American man took to Reddit’s Wedding Shaming forum yesterday to describe how a friend who said they couldn’t make it because they were traveling in Australia decided to turn up on the day unannounced.

Despite being annoyed, the groom managed to seat the guest at the last minute, but was further annoyed when he drank 10 beers, complained of being hungry and got rid of four of the free pizzas they had put on to the guests.

The final straw was when we seduced the groom’s sister, who is in a vulnerable state, and then bragged on social media about having sex with her.

Redditors were divided with some claiming the friend was ‘completely out of line’ and the groom should cut him off, while others accused him of overreacting and questioned why the caterers couldn’t rattle off some food for just one extra person .

The groom began by explaining: ‘It was my wedding this weekend and the last few months have been very stressful setting it all up.

“Between me and my wife, we worked full time and put every detail into the wedding to make sure everything went smoothly.

‘We sent out the responses months ago and got all the catering sorted so everyone was catered for.’

‘On Saturday there was a huge relief when the day had come, everything was sorted and we could just relax. That was until the guests started arriving.’

He revealed: ‘Everything was going smoothly and all of a sudden a friend had just decided he wanted to turn up.

‘He was originally invited but because he’s traveling in Australia he said he wouldn’t be able to make it. However, he had planned to surprise me on the day instead.

‘I was enraged when I saw his stupid smile and expected to be grateful that he had made the effort to come all the way. I said hello to him and just smiled a little, but inside I was mad.

“I got even madder when he said ‘Is that it?’ It was super awkward and I did my best to just cover it up.’

The groom tried to put the unwelcome guest to the back of his mind and instead tried to enjoy the important moment he had waited so long for – but he couldn’t help but grow more irritated as the day went on.

He continued: ‘I became more of a p***** when I had to think about how we were going to look after him as it was too uncomfortable to send him away.

‘I would have felt bad too, so it was a bit of a catch-22. So I got the best man to just talk to the kitchen who said they couldn’t take care of him as they didn’t have the stuff and it would cost too but they said they could sit with him.

‘I explained to him that he could sit and he was ok with that. I was shocked to see that he managed to grab a plate and asked for leftovers at the table – there wasn’t even that much.

– As the day went on, he kept pulling me aside and saying how good it was that he made it all the way for him.

“I kind of snapped and said, while I appreciate the gesture, it’s been super inconvenient.”

The Redditor recalled that his friend ‘got into a mood’ and he later heard that he was ‘sucking on one of the tables and waiting for people to walk up to him’.

He admitted: ‘Obviously I didn’t want it to spoil the day and I’d had a few drinks by this point so I went over to have a bit of a chat with him as he’s a friend.

‘It went ok but he just kept saying how hungry he was after drinking about 10 of the free beers we paid for.

‘At the end of the night I saw him leave with about 4 boxes of the free pizza we had delivered and ended up going to sleep with my sister who just found out she has alopecia.’

To finish off the bizarre story, he added: ‘I saw he had posted on Instagram earlier this week saying how well the surprise went down and didn’t even include pictures of me or my wife.

‘He bragged that it was unlimited pizza, beer and posted a cryptic hashtag about how he was berating my sister #sistafisa.

“I boxed him in and told him he was out of business and I don’t want to be friends with him anymore and he said I’m ungrateful and overreacting.”

Within 24 hours, there were more than 100 replies to the thread, and people’s opinions were divided.

One user joked: ‘Wow. What a trip lol! It started with a very typical, rude guest and then BAM he steals pizza and beats your sister. I got a bit of whiplash to be honest.’

Another asked: ‘He took 4 boxes of pizza?!’ with a third adding: ‘He really wanted the day to be about himself, didn’t he? I think he was more annoyed that no big deal was made out of him’.

A fourth agreed: ‘You weren’t out of line or overreacting at all. He was completely out of line and cutting off that friendship will save you a lot of headaches in the future.’

But many social media users found it odd that there was no way the caterer could allow an extra guest, as well as finding some of the details of the story bizarre.

Someone asked, ‘Wait, what does your sister with alopecia have to do with anything?’

Another added: ‘What type of caterer doesn’t have an extra plate of food? What if the server dropped a record? God forbid two. This overhead generally accounted for plate costs.’

Another responded in agreement, saying: ‘Thank you! I stopped reading after this. I have never worked at a restaurant where they made just the right amount. There are always some left over just in case.’

‘Sorry, I laughed. Just that it’s really unclear how your sister having alopecia has anything to do with any of this.

‘I think you took it all a bit too seriously and ruined your own day. Strange that there was just enough for the guests that were there,” another Redditor added.

Another laughed: ‘To be honest I would have just thanked him for coming and not.

‘Sounds like this lived rent-free in OP’s head the entire wedding day and is still squatting.’

Another person insisted: ‘Honestly, you sound like a fool. Your friend comes to your wedding to surprise you and you act like an ass to him?

‘Yikes. I would be disgusted if my friend treated me like this. That there wasn’t a little extra food for ONE person is ridiculous.’

Meanwhile, another wrote: ‘We had a friend do this when we rented a resort for my husband’s big birthday. Showed up as a surprise and then asked me where his room was.

‘Luckily I was able to rustle up some foam and some bedding but he had to sleep on the floor.

‘My husband was so happy to see him and it wasn’t a catering deal, so not as violent as this one. Still, it’s strange what homes people expect when you don’t even know they’re coming.’

Another Redditor reasoned: ‘It is absolutely rude for a guest to show up after saying no, but this also happens all the time and any caterer or venue worth their salt will prepare for this eventuality.

‘It’s crazy to me that it bothered you so much.’
