The car was traveling on the Bruce Highway near Alligator Creek, south of Townsville in North Queensland, when it caught fire at 2pm on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene and medics treated 35 people on site, including the bus driver.

The group was treated for smoking-related illnesses.
