Are we celebrating Christmas too early? Influencer reveals she puts her tree up straight after Bonfire Night but comedian claims it’s ‘pointless showing off’

Good Morning Britain was the scene of a passionate debate today after the show asked if we were celebrating Christmas too early.

Comedian Mike McClean said people who hang up their decorations early “get on his nerves” and content creator Sophia Ferrari-Wills, from Cambridge, says “we all need a little happiness”.

Traditionally, Christmas trees and decorations must be put up on the first day of Advent, which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which falls on the following weekend.

However, Sophia revealed she puts up the tree straight after bonfire night, saying it “fuels the Christmas excitement” for her children.

The mother-of-two added: “I love the atmosphere, the lamps are on, there’s never any bright lights and fairy lights are another form of that.

“We all need a little happiness, we all need a little coziness and that’s what people say, as soon as Halloween and bonfire night is over, someone is waiting for you to start it, as soon as someone puts up the fairy lights, it all begins.

“The kids love it, it already builds excitement.”

And TV presenter Mike said: “We’re celebrating Christmas too early at the moment.” Chris Rea is going home for Christmas in July.

“People are boiling Brussels sprouts now, it’s too early. The other day I went home and my neighbor had a tree in his window and a tree in his other window, just bragging, “Look at me, I can pay the electric bill.”

Sophia said she thinks people don’t want to put up decorations early because they get bored with them.

She said: “I like a tidy house, a tidy mind, so if the hallways are up too early, suddenly there’s too much dust and all the things people like to do – deep clean, take out decorations and keep things calm.”

“I like to ring in the New Year fresh, so I take them off before New Year.”

Mike McClean says he puts up the tree on December 23rd and takes it down on December 27th.

Someone else wrote: “Why is it the same debate every year, put it early, put it later or don’t bother at all, do what makes you happy.”

And a fourth said: “We’re not doing anything.” Absolutely zero! No lanterns, no terraces, no trees. A waste of money and energy!”
