BLIND DATE: So what happened on the date so bad that he said she was ‘good’… and she cried on the way home?

Each week, FEMAIL asks two singletons to report back from their blind date.

This time it’s the turn of Kat, a 36-year-old personal assistant, and life coach Alex, 37.

Read on to find out exactly why Cupid’s arrow failed…

Cat, 36

Private personal assistant.

Dating past?

I was in a six year relationship that ended last summer.

Nerves before a date?

I wasn’t nervous about it at all. I just wanted to enjoy the experience.

First impression?

When I walked in, I knew Alex wasn’t my type. There was nothing special about his physical appearance that put me off, he just didn’t look… exciting enough to me and I don’t really know why. But I trust my instincts.

Easy to talk to?

I’m afraid it felt like an interview. One of the first things he wanted to talk about was politics and Brexit, and that’s not a topic for a first date. Then he asked me about my savings and investments, which I don’t even discuss with my friends. I got the feeling he wasn’t there to meet a potential new partner and isn’t used to having conversations with women.

Embarrassing moments?

He kept burping throughout the meal, which I really didn’t like.

Did sparks fly?

No not at all. After about an hour and a half he announced that he wanted to ask for the bill as he had a friend nearby to meet. It was odd; I felt like I was being ‘dismissed’ from the interview so I got up to leave.

It was such an abrupt way to end things that I burst into tears on the way home, even though I knew there was no real connection.

See him again?

No, I don’t want to see him again.

What do you think he thought of you?

I think he thought I was attractive when he said, ‘You look good’ and ‘I like your top’ (even though I was wearing a dress). He wanted my number and asked me for it at the end of the date, not because I think he wanted to keep in touch, but because he wanted to send me some links to his business.

I gave it to him to be polite, but I got the feeling he knew I wasn’t interested in him.

Would your family like him?

They will never meet, but no, they would not have the same interests.

Nerves before a date?

I was apprehensive; a blind date is out of my comfort zone.

First impression?

Kat was well dressed, although I can’t remember her outfit. But as soon as she came towards me, I just knew I wasn’t attracted to her. She was attractive, but there was something about the way she carried herself. It’s hard to pinpoint, but she seemed so nervous.

Easy to talk to?

Yes, she was lovely. We had a few things in common. She likes her fitness and I am a personal trainer.

We talked about her childhood growing up in the Czech Republic. Kat used to work with young people – a child therapist – but she said she didn’t necessarily want children of her own.

I told her that I have been helping with a new startup for children with suicidal thoughts, and could tell that she had a lot of empathy.

We talked about mental health and she really started to come out of her shell, but it was too late by then. We had both agreed that we didn’t want another drink, so the date came to a natural end.

Embarrassing moments?

The first 15 minutes were a bit awkward because she is vegan and couldn’t find a dish on the menu that she liked.

Did sparks fly?

No. I hate the word “pretty” but that’s all she was to me. There was no chemistry, but she was a very decent, nice person.

See her again?

We exchanged numbers after she offered me her number, but I’m not sure we’ll keep in touch. Still, I will send her a message. I had offered to send her some links about a movie we had talked about and the startup I’m working on.

What do you think she thought of you?

I think she felt there was no connection. But she seemed to warm to me towards the end; she would probably say I was pleasant and funny.

Would your family like her?

Yes, she came across as very caring, but maybe not really to me.
