Dr Michael Yung home invasion, Adelaide: Top surgeon dies in hospital after being viciously bashed inside his $2MILLION home by a gang of thugs in a terrifying break-in – as cops reveal the disturbing clues uncovered in the hours before the attack

A highly respected doctor has died from his injuries after being brutally beaten by a gang of thugs in his own home.

Michael Jung, 61, was attacked by a gang of youths about 4.20am on Monday after they broke into his $2 million home on James Street in Gilberton, in Adelaide’s north.

Dr Young underwent emergency surgery after being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he died from injuries sustained during the unprovoked attack, including stab wounds.

His family made the heartbreaking decision to switch off his life support on Tuesday afternoon after doctors at the Royal Adelaide Hospital concluded his injuries were “incurable”.

The bandits managed to evade capture despite a massive manhunt launched on Monday, but police hope arrests will be made in the near future.

Dr Jung is believed to have suffered chest, bowel and head injuries causing a brain haemorrhage after breaking through a glass door and being stabbed.

It is believed that his family, including his two sons, brother and sister, granted the doctor’s wish to donate his organs as a final gift to medicine.

“He was a strong believer in organ donation,” said a close friend of Dr. Jung. Advertiser.

“Over the years, he has counseled dozens and dozens of families about the benefits of organ donation.”

The former head of the pediatric intensive care unit at the Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital had nearly 40 years of medical experience.

Dr Jung’s death was the latest tragedy for his family since his wife, health policy expert Catherine Brown-Jung, died suddenly in her sleep in March 2020.

Shortly after her death, Dr. Jung established a $5,000 scholarship to support Indigenous medical students in the name of his “kind, caring and intelligent” wife.
