The midfielder scored two goals as the Magpies finished in a record 16th place in the Premier League and was involved in emotional scenes in the dressing rooms afterwards.

De Goey was captured on video placing his premiership medal around his grandmother’s neck after asking her: “Do you want it?” and then asking someone to take a photo as a beaming Elizabeth bit into the metal as if checking. Is she real? .

The victory was particularly satisfying for De Goey after he turned his career around after experiencing off-field problems in the last two years.

“They’ve just created a family culture and I’ve really thrived in it, as have a lot of other boys.”
