Jealous gunman Abil Malovski who shot at his ex-wife’s new partner at a flower stall hurls abuse at judge as he’s sent to jail for 15 years: ‘Only God can sentence me’

A jealous man who tried to kill a personal trainer he believed was dating his ex-wife launched a furious tirade in court while jailed for two decades.

“Go to hell, you pedophile dog,” he shouted, making a “rude gesture” towards Judge Andrew Tinney after learning his fate.

“I don’t care about your verdict… Only God can sentence me.

“I’m a fucking dog man.”

Abil Malowski, 39, was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on Wednesday after being found guilty of attempted murder of his ex-wife’s friend Stephen Grant in May last year.

Mr Grant was helping Malowski’s ex with a roadside flower stand just before Mother’s Day when a gunman approached him shouting: “I’m going to kill you, you f***ing piece of crap.”

He fired three shots “without warning”, hitting Mr Grant in the neck, head and thumb, before chasing him through a roadside nature reserve in Melton, west of Melbourne.

As Grant attempted to flee, Malovsky fired several more shots, one of which struck him in the back, leaving Grant fighting for his life.

He now suffers from T9 incomplete paraplegia and requires crutches to walk.

Grant’s injuries left him unable to carry out many daily activities on his own, including driving, taking public transportation and working as a personal trainer.

At trial, Malovsky claimed self-defense during the public shooting, saying Grant was a “violent and dangerous man” who confronted him.

“It is not at all surprising that the completely bogus defense was quickly rejected by the jury,” Judge Tinney said.

Judge Tinney found the shooting, which was captured in “shocking detail on dashcam footage”, was motivated by his hatred of Mr Grant and a secondary desire to control his ex-wife.

“The motive was extreme anger for his sin, as you saw it, to force you out of your family,” he said.

“It’s clear to me that you feel no remorse at all.”

Malovsky fled the scene, throwing away the pistol, which was never found, and two days later surrendered to the police.

In a victim impact statement to the court, Grant said he will “never recover” from the shooting.

“The scars on my body are a daily reminder of what happened,” he said.

Judge Tinney found Malovsky posed a “real and substantial risk” to his ex-wife, who told the court she lived in fear of further violence, and to the general public.

“You have completely failed to come to terms with the breakdown of your marriage,” Judge Tinney said.

“This escalated into a murderous rage when you attempted to kill Mr. Grant 18 months ago… You will continue to pose a threat to her and anyone she comes into contact with.”

Malovsky was sentenced to 20 years in prison and will have to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison.

He will be eligible for parole in 2038.
