JOANNE HEGARTY: THE CHIC LIST – Who wants to dress up as the other half of a murderous drug lord as he breathes new life into the fur industry?
- With a brand new season upon us, here’s what I will and won’t be doing this spring

First, I don’t want to dress like a mob wife—or anyone else’s wife, for that matter. How strange that this microtrend to look like a gangster’s mold in 2024 has captivated TikTok’s young and old. I mean, who wants to look like the other half of a murderous drug lord?
Anyway, if you want to go down the route of animal prints, heavy gold jewelry, shiny leather pants, perfectly undone hair and a massive fur coat – unfortunately, breathe new life into the fur industry while you’re at it – call yourself the head honcho, not just the wife one.
That said, I could be tempted by a leopard print coat, although I would wear it the best way – with a black polo neck and black trousers underneath.
One of my little pleasures is watching social media scrolls while waiting for a takeaway coffee or sitting out of breath and tired in a taxi. I love the sheer variety of what pops up on my screen.
Blazer, Massimo Dutti, turtleneck, Arket, pants, Toteme, belt, Celine, bag, Jil Sander
But oh my gosh, the comments that people leave are horrible. What’s wrong with them? If a couple is renovating their house, viewers line up to tell them it’s terrible.
Or if someone shares a funny slice of life with their kids, they’ll get nasty judgments about their parenting skills. People’s looks, style and careers are being spoiled and pulled apart. There are no limits. What is happening to humanity?
So this spring I will try to turn off my phone – yes, just for a little bit – dress up and see more theater. With so many great acting names now treading the West End boards – from Sarah Jessica Parker in Plaza Suite to Successionis Sarah Snook in The picture of Dorian Gray – there is so much to see.
‘Flowers? to spring? Groundbreaking!’ There is a good reason why this line from The Devil Wears Prada is constantly cited, and as expected, the latest collections stick to the usual abundance of flowers.
If you’ve been reading this column for a while, you’ll know that I’m not the biggest fan of flowers. However, there is something about the rose – the one flower that has managed to stand out from the rest of the bouquet – that has seduced even me.
From prints of full-on, long-stemmed versions with leaves, thorns and all to (even better) 3D creations, roses have been absolutely everywhere on the runways and awards season red carpets.
For inspiration, take a look at Simone Rocha’s new playful and modern approach to the rose – or Margot Robbie in her Balmain dress at the recent Critics Choice Awards.
Push the envelope
When it comes to evening dressing, nothing is more stylish than a clutch. This season, the sleek envelope design returns, and we couldn’t be happier. Although it’s big enough to hold a tight edit of essentials—phone, lipstick, and keys—its neat shape is slender nails.
Pull the hip cord
Elevate knitted dresses with this simple leather cord necklace – it’s also perfect for layering over spring/summer outfits.
Come in lime
Enjoy a little spring vibe with this uplifting cashmere knit. Layer it with high-waisted trousers or midi skirts and add gold accessories for extra fun flair.
