Police shot and killed a man after a disturbance at a motel.

The man is alleged to have walked into the back of a motel on Herbert Street in Bowen, in Queensland’s Whitsunday region, where the disturbance occurred at about 5.30am on Thursday.

Police and paramedics attended the scene after a member of the public reported the altercation.

He then entered the motel and returned with a large knife, where he began threatening officers and paramedics, police said.

The police then opened fire on the man.

He was treated by Queensland Ambulance and police officers who had already arrived at the scene, but were unable to resuscitate him.

He died on the spot and a crime scene has been declared.

“The matter is being investigated by the Ethics Standards Authority on behalf of the State Coroner and the investigation is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.
