Michael Owen has questioned whether Bruno Fernandes was “enjoyed” by Manchester United’s move to Liverpool after the midfielder was suspended for the match.

Referee Peter Banks showed playmaker Fernandes a yellow card for dissent in the closing stages of his side’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

The warning, given after an argument with the referee, was his fifth of the season, meaning he will have to watch from the stands at Anfield next Sunday.

Reflecting on the 84th-minute incident against the Cherries, Owen suggested Fernandes needed to become a “team leader”.

In accordance with Mirror, he said: “I wonder how many yellow cards he got for dissent and waving his arms.”

“You might not want to go to Anfield. I wouldn’t at this point. I’m not sure what you think about the next game when you’re in the thick of it.

“He must be responsible, he must be a good ambassador, a leader of the team. We all know the referees are after it and he gets a lot of warnings for a player who barely puts his foot down and wins the ball, in fact he gets a lot of warnings.”

United are three points off the Champions League spot after defeat at home to Andoni Iraola’s side but have played a game more than their rivals.

Dominic Solanke made the early breakthrough and stunned the crowd before second-half goals from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi capped a poor performance.

Fernandes has started every Premier League game for United this season, scoring five goals and providing five assists in the top flight and Champions League.

His warning will result in him serving a one-match suspension.

The 29-year-old was shown a yellow card in the 84th minute, with the visitors already leading by three goals, after a foul on Bournemouth defender Adam Smith.

He will be a big setback for United on Merseyside. Ten Hag’s side were beaten 7-0 last season and will be heavy underdogs again this campaign.

United’s midweek win over Chelsea restored a semblance of hope at the club, although that optimism was dashed by the latest surprise setback.

After the match, Fernandes criticized United’s lack of consistency.

“We were missing a lot of things, so we won’t get a result today,” he said.

“Everything was lower than the levels in the game before and that’s why when you play teams like Bournemouth who are really aggressive, they press you and you think it’s going to be easy, you get these results.
