Kansas City Chiefs fans won’t find an ally in NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who weighed in on the “controversial” finish to last week’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney scored a touchdown on a brilliant lateral hit by tight end Travis Kelce. However, Toney was caught offside and canceled out what could have been the winning score.

After days of complaints from Chiefs management and key players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Goodell stood next to the officials.

“There was no doubt about that foul,” Goodell said (according to Ian Rapoport). “It was absolutely the right choice.”

The call robbed Kelce of his moments of brilliance, but the Chiefs seemed more angry that the officials had not warned Toney that he was offside longer than the penalty was actually called.

A screaming Mahomes had to be restrained as he tried to confront the officials before telling opposition QB Josh Allen the call was “fucking terrible” in dramatic moments late in the game at Arrowhead Stadium.

In the days that followed, a calmer Mahomes acknowledged that Allen deserved “better sportsmanship” after the loss.

On Wednesday, Mahomes admitted he missed the boat and is trying to be a better example.

“I think it’s the pressure of being a good person,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “I try to carry myself in a way that I can be a good role model because I’ve looked up to the guys that have been on that stage since I was little, running around the locker room.”

“I’m just trying to be a good person,” Mahomes continued. “Obviously I care, so my emotions were shown on the football field and they were shown in a good way, but obviously it wasn’t a good thing.”
