A 28-year-old Portland woman was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack due to a rare genetic disease on her way to her honeymoon.
Sarah Seely was heading to Hawaii for her honeymoon with her husband Mitch when she suffered cardiac arrest on October 23, the day after their wedding.
Her mother-in-law, who was driving, was forced to stop so Mitch could perform CPR and save his new wife.
After four weeks of tests, doctors were able to determine that Seeley suffered from juvenile hemochromatosis.

The disease is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the accumulation of iron in various organs of the body.
Juvenile hemochromatosis can appear before the age of 30. Common symptoms include absent or decreased testicular function in men or ovarian function in women, cardiovascular disease, liver scarring, joint disease, diabetes and hyperpigmentation.
Her sister Jane Madden, who is pursuing a doctorate in biomedical sciences, spoke about this. COIN 6: “There have been fewer than 200 diagnosed cases recorded throughout this period. “It’s a recessive disease, which means both our mom and her dad are carriers, and it’s very rare for this to happen, and she just happened to get both bad alleles.”
Madden also said Seeley suffered a stroke on the right side of her brain, which left the left side of her body temporarily paralyzed.
She is currently undergoing physical therapy, heart medications and iron chelation to return to daily life.

Madden said Seely had no insurance and was forced to run crowdfunding page to support her sister’s medical bills.
“The costs associated with Sarah’s treatment placed a huge burden on her and her family. The dream of a happy start to family life was overshadowed by huge medical bills.
“Sarah did not have health insurance that could cover significant medical expenses until Mitch was able to get her benefits under his plan. Unfortunately, this has resulted in astronomical medical bills that continue to accumulate and exceed our family’s means.
“Before she got married, she didn’t have health insurance because she had too much money to qualify for OHP (and) not enough to pay for private insurance. Many people are stranded,” said the concerned sister.
So far, the fundraiser has reached $15,225 of its $100,000 goal.
