Former NFL quarterback and current NFL Network analyst David Carr believes the Philadelphia Eagles should start Marcus Mariota over Jalen Hurts.
“I would say he’s probably a better cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles,” Carr said of Mariota. “He would be more productive right now. Later, when you’re healthy, I’ll see you in the playoffs, Jalen.”
“Obviously Jalen is not comfortable reading defenses in a pass-back scenario. Some would say he’s not even very good at it,” Carr continued.
“If you’re from Philadelphia, you’re going to have to have some serious conversations. And you really have to say, “Shouldn’t we be better off playing Marcus Mariota right now and letting Jalen get fully healthy?” Carr said.
Carr proposed the idea while the Eagles are clearly in the postseason picture and in no real danger of falling below seventh in the NFC.
Jalen Hurts temporarily left Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a concussion.
Marcus Mariota, a longtime journeyman quarterback, replaced Hurts against San Francisco.
David Carr was a defensive end in the NFL and thinks the Eagles should start playing Mariota now.
Hurts temporarily left Philadelphia’s game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday to be evaluated for a concussion and was replaced by Mariota.
Carr believes the unique idea of benching Hurts has become broader for the Eagles, whose main goal is to win the Super Bowl and need to rest their star quarterback in games that aren’t win-or-go-home. .
Carr believes that, as evidenced by Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, it won’t matter to Philadelphia whether it makes the playoffs as a No. 1 seed or not.
The Eagles have not made any statement about Hurts’ injury, nor have they said the man they signed to a $255 million extension this offseason will not take the field for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
To close out the regular season, Philadelphia will also play games against the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and a pair of games against the New York Giants.
