Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark join Queen Margrethe to celebrate her 84th birthday – after a frosty display on the Easter ski trip
Queen Mary and King Frederik joined Queen Margrethe in Fredensborg today ahead of her birthday celebrations after they appeared frosty with each other on a family skiing trip at Easter.
The royal couple, Queen Margrethe and her sister, Princess Benedikte, posed outside the royal residence with Margrethe’s beloved sausage dog Tilia, who was also present.
The family celebrated privately at Fredensborg Castle, a setting used for important family events such as weddings, silver anniversaries and birthdays.
Mary, 52, put her best fashion foot forward, opting for a baby blue jacket teamed with a brooch which she pinned to the left of her chest.
Opting for navy suit trousers and a blouse with matching pointed heels, she pulled her brunette locks into a practical ponytail.

Looking elegant, the new queen opted for simple diamond earrings and opted to wear natural makeup today.
Princess Benedikte also donned a blue blouse and patterned knee-length skirt, along with a modest blazer and matching pearl jewellery.
Margrethe cut a sophisticated figure as she wore a matching navy blazer with a conservative midi skirt.
The former paired this with a red and white patterned blouse which she tucked into her skirt and completed the look with black strappy heels.
King Frederik, 55, looked dapper in a charcoal gray plaid suit, which he paired with a crisp white shirt and polished brown shoes.
The couple, who took the Danish throne in January, stood next to each other, with Mary’s hands at her side and Frederik’s behind her back, before waving to crowds of royal fans.
The monarch opted for a sapphire blue tie that matched the same color scheme as his wife in a display of sartorial solidarity amid rumors of marital strife in recent months.
In November 2023, pictures of Crown Prince Frederick enjoying an evening out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casnova sent shockwaves through Denmark.
In the pictures, the royal and the billionaire’s former daughter-in-law, the Duchess of Alba, were seen walking through Madrid before heading to her apartment building, changing clothes and heading out again for the evening.

The publication of the photos resulted in Genoveva, 47, issuing a statement denying any romantic relationship between herself and the royal and quashing the ‘malicious’ rumours.
For the past few weeks, Queen Mary has fueled the rumor mill by undertaking a series of solo royal engagements without her husband.
On 3 April, the mother of four participated in the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Home Guard at the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen.
Four days later, Queen Mary completed another solo engagement when she attended the opening of a zoo in Nærum.
On 9 April, Queen Mary stepped out without her husband again for a charity conference in Copenhagen.
King Frederik and Queen Mary’s schedules appeared to overlap a bit at the start of the month as they welcomed various guests to Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen.
Last Friday, the official Instagram account of the Danish royal house shared two posts detailing Frederik and Mary’s separate engagements.

On the same day, pictures emerged from the couple’s skiing trip to Switzerland, which did little to dispel rumors of difficulties between the pair.
The pair appeared very cold to each other during a trip in March to Verbier, an exclusive ski resort in Switzerland.
Mary, 52, appeared impatient with Frederik, 55, as she turned her back on him as they prepared to hit the slopes.
Pictures show Mary, who was the picture of skichic in a wool and cashmere blend jacquard sweater with a turtleneck by Moncler, looking away from her husband – as he stood defiantly with his hands on his hips.
The couple were joined by their four children, Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and 13-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
