Queen Mary of Denmark is stepping out solo again as she opens a zoo in Copenhagen after fans wondered if someone ‘got away’ from their Easter break

Queen Mary of Denmark looked typically stylish today as she opened a Zoo in Copenhagen with Denmark’s Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke, amid rumors that she ditched a planned trip with her husband Prince Frederik.

The Australian-born royal, 52, looked the epitome of country chic in a gray jumper, black Seeland Cottage Quilt Lady Waistcoat and floppy hat.

Opting for a glamorous make-up look, the former PR executive wore thick eyeliner and mascara on top of a layer of golden foundation.

The outing in Nærum comes amid speculation that Mary may have spent the Easter holidays away from Prince Frederik, as their flag remained raised above their mansion at Amalienborg Castle – meaning that at least Frederik, Mary or their son Crown Prince Christian were there present

The family often travel for Easter, and the palace said last week that Queen Margrethe, 83, will act as head of state while the whole family travels out of the country.

However, it appears that a last-minute change took place, with Mary possibly remaining in Copenhagen.

This has further fueled rumors about the state of the couple’s marriage after Frederik was pictured with glamorous Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova.

Putting rumors and controversy behind her, Mary looked delighted with the outing today as she spotted a deer and chatted with young fans.

Earlier this week, the Queen paired this with a fashionable wide-brimmed hat and blue leather gloves.

Mary put her best fashion foot forward, choosing to pair the outfit with tawny leather heeled boots.

The mum-of-two wore her brunette locks down in a curly blow-dry and opted for glamorous make-up with smoky eyeshadow and pink gloss.

Mary’s visit was also marked by sadness.

According to Billed Bladet, a Home Guard soldier died of a cardiac arrest while on duty the night before Mary’s visit.

She took to the podium to address military personnel and pay tribute to the fallen soldier.

‘For 75 years, the Home Guard has created safety and security for the Danes.

“It’s a day we want to celebrate, but before I go any further, I’d also like to express my deepest condolences to those bereaved by last night’s tragic death,” she said.

It has been a troubled few years for the Danish royals, including ‘affair’ rumors and discord over title changes, the family has entered a new chapter following King Frederik X’s accession to the throne in January.

As royal fans were sent into a frenzy by the mystery of Mary staying behind, many replayed King Frederik’s night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Madrid last fall, sparking rumors of an ‘affair’ around the world.

Genoveva was spotted with King Frederik last November as the pair enjoyed dinner at a flamenco restaurant in Madrid until the early hours of the morning, Spanish magazine Lecturas reported.

Pictures of the pair out and about in the Spanish capital sparked rumors of an affair, which Genoveva vehemently denied in a legal letter posted on Instagram.

After announcing the rejection, Genoveva sought solace in San Sebastian, where the family of her ex-husband Cayetano Martínez de Irujo owned a property.

Spanish magazine Hola! reported that the socialite was staying at the Palace of Arbaizenea, a property once owned by the Duchess of Alba and bequeathed to her son Cayetano Martínez de Irujo. The magazine reported that Genoveva goes to San Sebastian whenever she needs to ‘disconnect’ from public life.

But last month, after several months off from social media, Genoveva made her return to public life with a new post on her Instagram page – including two selfies with her fluffy pooch. The reality TV star and the king enjoyed included a stroll in a park, going to an art exhibition and a meal while watching flamenco.

In a legal letter posted on Instagram, she slammed the ‘malicious’ rumors suggesting the pair were romantically involved.

The couple have only held the title of king and queen since Queen Margrethe abdicated on 31 December.

This led to speculation that Queen Margrethe’s abdication may have been driven to save the marriage between her son and Princess Mary in the wake of the alleged ‘affair’.

Royal commentator Phil Dampier told The telegraph: ‘It is possible that the queen took this action because she would have been afraid that the marriage would break up and the royal family would lose Mary.

“That would have caused big problems.

‘The Queen has always seen Mary as a huge asset.’
