The heartbreaking truth behind Tammy Hembrow’s engagement to Love Island Australia star Matt Zukowski

Tammy Hembrow thrilled fans on Sunday when she announced that her boyfriend, Love Island Australia star Matt Zukowski, had proposed to her after just three months of dating.

But Tammy’s big news came with a heartbreaking caveat: Matt wouldn’t be able to give her children.

Matt, 28, suffers from infertility, a condition he discovered just a few years ago.

In October he joined Back to reality podcast that talks about the heartbreak of learning his body doesn’t produce sperm.

The reality star told hosts Tuck and Selina that he’s “not embarrassed” by the reproductive issue, but admitted it does affect his approach to dating.

“If I started dating a girl… that would be the first thing I told them. My ex, before I told her about it on the second date, I said, “Hey, like, just so you know, I can’t have kids.”

“It doesn’t bother me. I’m not ashamed of it… obviously now it will become public knowledge that I shoot blanks and all that,” he added.

The hosts then asked Matt how he found out about his fertility problem, and he stated that his ex pushed him to get tested because they “weren’t getting pregnant.”

CAUSES OF MALE INFERTILITY

The most common cause of infertility in men is poor quality semen, the fluid containing sperm ejaculated during sex.

Possible causes of abnormal sperm include:

  • low sperm count – you may have a very low sperm count or no sperm at all
  • sperm that do not move properly – this will make it harder for the sperm to reach the egg.
  • Abnormal sperm – Sperm can sometimes be abnormally shaped, making it difficult for it to travel and fertilize an egg.

Many cases of abnormal sperm are unexplained.

There is a link between increased scrotal temperature and decreased sperm quality, but it is unclear whether wearing loose underwear improves fertility.

Testicles

The testes produce and store sperm. If they are damaged, it can seriously affect the quality of your sperm.

This may happen as a result of:

  • infection of your testicles
  • Testicular cancer
  • testicular surgery
  • a problem with the testicles you were born with (birth defect)
  • when one or both testicles have not descended into the scrotum, the loose sac of skin that contains the testicles (undescended testicles)
  • testicular injury

Sterilization

Some men decide to have a vasectomy if they don’t want children or more children.

It involves cutting and sealing the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles (vas deferens) so that there are no more sperm in your semen.

A vasectomy can be reversed, but reversal is not usually successful.

Hypogonadism

Hypogonadism is an abnormally low level of testosterone, the male sex hormone involved in sperm production.

It can be caused by a tumor, illicit drug use, or Klinefelter syndrome, a rare syndrome in which a man is born with an extra female chromosome.

Medicines and medications

Certain types of medications can sometimes cause infertility problems.

These medications are listed below:

  • sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat diseases such as Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis; Sulfasalazine may reduce your sperm count, but its effect is temporary and your sperm count should return to normal when you stop taking it.
  • Anabolic steroids – often used illegally to build muscle mass and improve athletic performance; Long-term abuse of anabolic steroids can reduce sperm count and motility.
  • Chemotherapy – Medicines used in chemotherapy can sometimes seriously reduce sperm production.
  • Herbal remedies – Some herbal remedies, such as extracts of the root of the Chinese herb Tripterygium wilfordii, may affect sperm production or reduce the size of the testicles.
  • Illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine can also affect sperm quality.

Matt then went into detail about the testing process.

“I went and I liked this sperm, well, you know, I don’t know how to say this nicely? Yeah. I put it in the cart and checked it,” he said.

“(The doctor) called me because it’s like we’re in a lockdown phase. And he was like, “Hey Matt, just let you know, you don’t have any sperm.” And I thought, “Oh, I don’t have enough sperm.” He said, “No, you don’t have sperm.” And I was like, “Oh, crap.”
